Region: Alentejo | Douro | Setúbal

The family firm José Maria da Fonseca has been in existence, for almost two centuries, and is known for its innovation. Founded in 1834 by the principles of the founder, the oldest producer of table wine from Setúbal - Moscatel wines –  their philosophy is based on the continuous development, invested in exploration and production, combining cutting-edge technology with traditional know-how .

Today, the sixth generation is leading the family business. Antonio Soares Franco, in 1986, was the President of the company. In addition, his younger brother – Domingos – took over the production line in 1983, creating a very personal style of wine that is six years old. We must also point out that, Domingos was a student at the University of Davis, California, and has a degree in Oenology, being also a member of the American Society of Enologists. This winemaker focuses mainly on autochthonous grape varieties, but is also open to experiment with imported varieties. With nearly 650 hectares of vineyards, the grapes are cultivated and processed in a winery with modern technology.

An example of the Fonseca company's commitment, among others, is with that of wine producer Jose Rosado Fernandes Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the Alentejo, where the Roman tradition of fermentation in clay amphoras coexisted. On the property of this producer, advanced technology was introduced and some vineyards were subject to certain experimentation. As such, different varieties were mixed, resulting in the creation of some interesting wines.

The Douro Valley was the only wine region that existed in Portugal and controlled the company. The first priority was the ground, as well as the Quinta do Vale da Mina and the Quinta de Mos. With a total of 15 hectares of vineyards being purchased and 31 hectares rented out long term. The goods are in the Douro superior and consist of much older vines. However, there are other vineyards, which are between ten and fifteen years of age. They are planted with the varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. Dry table wines are aged and bottled by the Fonseca company, in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão.

The typicality of the wine is preserved over the years, but firstly, the brand is always noted and not the company. Although wine consumption is decreasing, demand increases the quality which may allow benefits to be reaped by the company José Maria da Fonseca.
